Most recently, Redkirk Warrior saluted with a thunderous burst to take out last year’s edition.

And it was just 12 months earlier when we saw another winner fall from the clouds.

After The Quarterback played up in the barriers and was scratched along with Faatinah and Orujo, Terravista flew home from the rear of the field to get the money.

Fastnet Rock’s enormous gust down the outside nutted Alinghi on the line in 2005.

Another exciting end to the Lightning came in 2010 when the David Hayes-trained Nicconi flashed home to blouse Wanted.

It was only a small field but in 2016 when everyone’s favourite grey, Chautauqua, produced a customary blistering finale to pass the line with his nose in front.

The 2009 edition saw WA visitor Scenic Blast come from the rear of the field, letting down with an enormous run to claim honours.

In 2007 (the only time the race was held at The Valley), a ruthless Miss Andretti dropped a bomb on her rivals.

It wasn’t a close finish but the way she put them away was simply brilliant.

And what’s a Lightning Stakes highlights package without the darling for which the race is named?

Black Caviar triumphed in 2011, 2012 and 2013 and all her wins were comfortable and fairly dominant, yet memorable.
