The Sydney Review March 274 weeks ago
It was certainly no disadvantage to be close to the fence, but the track played outstandingly given the amount of rain in the lead up. Kudos to them.
ISOTOPE is a winner and this was a strong win. For me, the story is ODEUM. Blinkers gave her plenty and back in trip to only be beaten by a star sprinter bodes well for a Filly that will do her best over the mile.
REALM OF FLOWERS is my Sydney Cup horse and this puts the writing on the wall for a Mare that’s going to eat up 3200m. Travelled deep without cover throughout on a genuine gallop and never stopped coming. Beats the winner FAVOURITE MOON in a few more strides and this run will have her peaking at the right time. Only horse to break 12sec for their L200m and did it off a tough run.
SHE’S IDEEL was a certainty beat here. The barrier and bad luck were costly and she walks in with any luck. 11.74 L200m a clear race fastest and only horse to break 12 seconds. Follow to Randwick. Though she may go to the Tancred next week. Not sold on her at WFA. Can forgive WELSH LEGEND who reared badly prior to jump and stewards considered whether she would be declared a non-runner as a result. She was not. She found herself at the tail as a result and badly held up. POLLY GREY very good of course.
What a race this was! VERRY ELLEGANT Vs ADDEYBB did not disappoint! VE most certainly had the better run in transit, with the UK visitor travelling without cover. He was off the bit early, but jeez he’s gutsy! Awfully hard to beat 2nd up, I will be following. ANGEL OF TRUTH ran a beauty and I’d be backing him up next week in the Tancred next week off this. He won the ATC Derby off the exact same set up. SIR DRAGONET was a massive improver and he levelled out well late. MASTER OF WINE - forget! COLETTE pulled up 1/5 lame. Strong enough to get 3200m in a Sydney Cup? I query that.
MO’UNGA wasn’t quite as electric as last start, but he made a long, sustained run after being flushed out early and all honours. They aren’t sure whether they go to Derby or Doncaster. He’s quite brilliant, I’d lean to the Doncaster. SKY LAB has always been a Derby horse and he did nothing but increase his credentials. MONTEFELIA was good, but is 2000m her hitting zone? Maybe she can get a trip now? She was 14-2000m and strong late (RF L200m), so hard to ignore. If she backs up next week in the vinery she’s hard to beat off this. LION’S ROAR held up a touch, margin unfair. Would have SKY LAB ahead for a Derby off this, though.
THINK IT OVER had yet to post a figure to put him in the finish here, but clearly he’s one of those horses that just does what they need to do and steps up when it matters. Into the Doncaster now and with 52kg and a will to win, he’s dangerous. This race is always a very strong Dancaster lead up, so might be time for some market respect. AVILIUS unlucky, but he seems to always be. A costly type to follow as he gets too far back. You can put CASCADIAN in the same boat.
Tommy Berry gave STAY INSIDE a G1 steer and he’s a G1 horse. Simply dominant and all honours. ANAMOE was outrageous and both he and ATORIUS were the only horses to break 35sec for their L600m. ANAMOE came from a mile back - Sires and Champagne Stakes look out. ATORIUS looked like a lost little boy on the turn and had absolutely no idea this way of going. He ripped home regardless and will take great benefit. PROFITEER simply couldn’t harness his energy and sustain the gallop over this trip and was disappointing. A well beaten favourite. He pulled up with heat stress which is of some excuse. He spells now.
The beaten margins here make it a difficult race to assess. EDUARDO has completely spanked these with the top weight, so it’s seriously hard to see anything turning the tables at WFA going forward given some, like HAUT BRION HER, have 6L to make up. The market said she was tuned up for this. She’s still got upside in her career, so won’t completely sack, and she did race keen in the middle stages, but a TJ off this? Hard. Difficult race to dissect.
AIR TO AIR was home in the F L8/6/4/200m OTR and was horrifically weighted as a 70 rater. Stable clearly have a high opinion, as they continually throw her in the deep end as a Class 1 Mare. She missed the start. 1400m yes. SEASONS has the run, won well. TRICKY GAL very good back in trip. WANDABAA honest as usual, gate was a major negative and she was bumped out of the gates.
