The story behind Adam Trinder getting his hands on Mystic Journey1 year ago
The story behind Mystic Journey finding her way to Adam Trinder is an intriguing one.
In just 12 starts, star Tasmanian filly Mystic Journey has amassed upwards of $1 million in prize money, and, with a Group 1 win on her CV, is an extremely value broodmare prospect.
Not bad for an $11,000 purchase (from the 2017 Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale).
Mystic Journey's trainer, Adam Trinder, joined Moody on the Mic – presented by Ladbrokes - to explain how the gun three-year-old found her way to his Spretyon stables.
And he wasn't taking much credit.
"It was Leah's (Trinder's fiancée) filly, she loved her," Trinder said.
"We'd had the siblings, the brother and the sister to her in the yard; we had a reasonable opinion of them, they hadn't been exposed.
"She was on our radar, and Leah said to Rhiannon, David Whishaw's wife at Armidale Stud there, 'What's your pick of the fillies'?
"She said, 'There's a nice little filly here that will bring no money'.
"We liked that comment.
"Leah said, 'We've got to go home with her'; we only had to spend $11,000 to go home with her, so it's been a good result.
"The only bad result was we didn’t keep a part of her."
A winner of nine of her 12 starts, Mystic Journey will line up in Saturday's $5 million All-Star Mile at Flemington, where she will pocket connections $2.25 million, should she be triumphant.
Mystic Journey has drawn barrier 16, but will jump from 12 if the four emergencies fail to gain a start.
"She's going to have to be better from barrier 16, with room to move, obviously," Trinder said.
"I would have liked to have drawn in a little bit, if I was having a pick I would have picked between four and eight.
"That being said, we're of the genuine belief that she's restricted inside horses, she's not confident."
Mystic Journey heads into the All-Star Mile fresh from her maiden victory at G1 level in the Australian Guineas.
"We rode her to win the race in the Guineas from barrier one, obviously," said Trinder.
"He (jockey Anthony Darmanin) thought she was probably, potentially a pair or two too close, which took a little bit of finish away from her.
"Gee, if he's right, she's going to get an opportunity to rest, and if she can finish better than what she did in the Guineas, she's going to be explosive."
Mystic Journey is on the second line of betting with Ladbrokes at $3.80, with star Godolphin mare Alizee the favourite at $3.60.
