The Melbourne Review April 17

I was at Caulfield on Saturday and witnessed the track from a height - despite all the recent racing it's holding up fairly well, the wear is relatively even right across the track, fingers crossed for no rain this week so the track has a chance again on Saturday.

FINANCE TYCOON Race 7 Caulfield

Consider a 2YO that is literally months deep into its first preparation and still racing well enough to win a million-dollar race - this was some win from Finance Tycoon, a horse that kicked off his prep way back in September last year. But for a two-month between runs he has basically kept going from MLB to QLD and back again, he ran serious time here on a track with give, home in 1.08.91 for the 1200m. Nice colt, looking forward to the future and his 3YO prep.

1. FANCIFUL TOFF (Caulfield R1)

I wonder if the Maher/Eustace camp will take this horse down to the Bool for the Cup...the tempo mid-race and a sprint home basically beat him here but I liked his late work and this might be the bridge race towards the Cup that he needed. I'd be very interested in him on a mid-weight HCP if he lobs at Warrnambool.

We can follow each of these horses with varying degrees of confidence in coming runs. Dice Roll might need a run between this and his next assignment, just to bring him on after such a long break; Spring Choice needed it here and should be ready to win third-up. Approach Discreet will be Bool bound and can make an impact over 1600m. Vongole just needs to draw a gate at this class and distance and he will be winning.

3. THE BIG EASY (Caulfield R5)

Not sure where they head with this girl now as she's been up for a little while but she's busting to win a race like this. She's been a little unlucky here on a second look at the replay, held up and then charging when the leader put up an unassialable break - keen to see her in similar Saturday off-season company, or in a Listed race somewhere in Adelaide.

4. RUBISAKI (Caulfield Race 7)

Rubi might be back...she didn't have any luck here and finished off with a bit of purpose which is much better than what she was doing in the spring. I want to see her win one again before getting carried away, but this was a good step in the right direction.

That FELICIA (3rd R8 $4.40 - $3.80) as there to win and she very nearly did, if anything this stable has them a little pretty first-up but this run will throw her forward. Not sure where they head to now...I'd assume Binnaisse will either be eyeing off Adelaide or Brisbane for some more black type.
