Star jockey to front betting probe
1 year agoMultiple Group 1-winning jockey Craig Newitt is believed to be a central figure in a multi-state investigation regarding alleged jockey betting.
It is understood Tasmanian-based Newitt, who has 33 G1s to his name, will front Racing Victoria (RV) stewards in the coming weeks.
When contacted by SEN.com.au, RV's chairman of stewards Robert Cram, said: "We're running investigations all of the time. We're not releasing any of those specifics or names of those investigations until the appropriate time.
"At this stage there's no further comment."
The news comes less than a week after Australia's leading trainer Darren Weir was disqualified for four years by the Racing and Appeals Disciplinary Board for possessing three illegal electronic apparatus known as 'jiggers' and of conduct prejudicial to the image of racing.
Newitt returned to his home state of Tasmania in 2017 after opportunities became limited in Victoria, and on Sunday he won the G3 Hobart Cup aboard Eastender.
Nicknamed 'Froggy', the 33-year-old has won some of the country's biggest races, including the Blue Diamond Stakes (twice), Victoria Derby and Australian Cup (twice), and enjoyed great success with champion sprinters Miss Andretti and Lankan Rupee.
SEN.com.au is in no way alledging any wrongdoing by Newitt.
