Star Irish jockey “hungry” for G1 success in Australia2 years ago
Leading international jockey Oisin Murphy has ambitions to taste Group 1 glory in Australia.
The 23-year-old Irish hoop rode a pair of G1 runner-ups last Spring Carnival, beaten on Benbatl by Winx in the Cox Plate, following a very close second on Spirit Of Valor in the Manikato Stakes.
Following a successful spell in Japan, Murphy will now ride again in Dubai, but says there is a desire to get back to Australia this year in a bid to scratch his Group 1 itch.
“I’ll ride at Meydan every Thursday now,” he told SEN.com.au.
“Basically I base myself in England and fly out every Wednesday night and straight back after racing Thursday night.
“I hope that I can come back down under in November.
“I’m very hungry to ride a Group 1 winner in Australia after two seconds on Benbatl and Spirit Of Valor.”
Murphy’s six-week stint in Japan at Tokyo and Nakayama racecourses netted 25 winners and 34 placings from 126 rides, and sees him leading the Japan Racing Association jockey premiership for 2019 upon completion of his spell.
After clinching an impressive nine Group 1s in five countries in 2018, including three on world champion three-year-old Roaring Lion in England, Murphy continues to impress as evidenced by leading Dubai race caller Craig Evans.
The Kerry-born, England-based Murphy has enjoyed two other stints in Australia in the past including 10 weeks as an apprentice in 2013 and three days over the Melbourne Cup Carnival in 2014, prior to last year's return.
He kicks off his time in Dubai tonight with four rides at Meydan.
