Review of racing- Doomben 13/11

Racing on the 13th of November in QLD was at Doomben with the rail at the 10m+ mark.

Overall a pretty weak days racing and the pattern of the day was very surprising. With the hot weather and rail out so far many (myself included) felt it could be dynamite leaders all day. It was far from that, they were actually avoiding the rail and although it wasn’t quicksand I’m sure it was the worst part of the track.

For the review of the day I want to focus on a couple of races where there are some horses it will pay to follow.

Race 3: 3yr old C-G Maiden 1200m:

WAPITI was a ridiculously short $1.30 off the very good debut run at 100/1 odds. Cormack used the gate to get the run of the race, from there he had a nice turn of foot and in the end he was an easy winner. He can be competitive of a Saturday from here but I’d rather see him on a bigger track. PICTON couldn’t go with the winner, still good through the line late and can find the right race soon, possibly back to the home track on the coast. We thought STUTTERING could run a race at $26 and that he did. Byrne drove forward, found the spot outside leader and for a few strides looked as though he’d be in the finish only to knock up and be a well beaten 3rd. He will win races, it might have all just come a bit soon this prep. Still a good run and up to $3.40 was bet a place race morning.

Race 7: Open Handicap 1350m:

All the money was for the Grafton Galloper TARBERT here. He has built a very good record in recent times and his trainer Johnny Shelton knows a bit about the caper! We were on TAWFIQ BOY who was in the 1/1 spot with TARBERT on his inside 3rd the fence. On the corner TAWFIQ BOY went for  home and looked all over a winner until TARBERT really lengthened the last 50m and on the line looked as though he’d won by a head. The judge couldn’t split them and a dead heat was called. Although both horses ran well I feel TARBERT could be worth following if they can find the right race at a bigger track up here.

*Not much else to take out of an average sort of midweek meeting*
