Racing: The Saturday Oil

The good horses are starting to return - and one of those is Avilus - who resumes in Race 9 at Caulfield - the Group 3 Carlyon Cup.

Mick Sharkie, Melbourne form guru for THERACECLUB.com.au, reckons Avilius (No.4) should be too classy for his rivals over the 1600 metres.

"Avilius is my best of the day," Sharkie said.

"He is a class above this lot and his turn of foot reminds me of my old boy Lucas Cranach.

"I can see him racing very well over a mile off a short break from the spring and his Warwick Farm trial on January 22 had me out of my seat - he had gears galore to use and was gobbling up good horses over 800 metres."

Avilius boasts a win and a third from three fresh runs, and he's one from two at 1600 metres.

Kerrin McEvoy has the ride from gate eight.

The five-year-old is almost certain to start favourite at around the $2.60 mark.

Meanwhile, South Australian form analyst, Adam Curkpatrick, is keen on a couple at Morphettville.

Curkpatrick likes Naseeb (No.2) in Race 3, while in Race 4, he feels Balf's Choice (No.1) is a good bet.
