Maher/Eustace team assembling talented lot of Weir horses

The training combination of Ciaron Maher and David Eustace is benefitting most from the Darren Weir situation.

Owners who previously had their horses under the care of the embattled Weir, who has been disqualified for four years by the Racing and Appeals Disciplinary (RAD) Board, have commenced moving their stock away from Ballarat and Warrnambool stables to rival trainers.

The Maher/Eustace team have already picked up a number of horses, including three-time Group 1 winners Humidor and Gailo Chop as well as Victorian Derby winner Extra Brut and Toorak Handicap victor Land of Plenty.

SEN Racing’s Trent Masenhelder reported today that Maher and Eustace, along with Mitchell Freedman, will be the major recipients of Weir’s main stock.

“I don’t think it’s a bad bet given that we’ve seen them already pick up a number of Weir’s stable stars,” Masenhelder told SEN.com.au when asked if Maher and Eustace will benefit greatly.

“I’m hearing as well that Mitch Freedman, who recently moved to Ballarat from Warrnambool and was an understudy to Darren Weir for a number of years, might be the beneficiary of a number of horses as well.

“I don’t think Mitch will be the big name that takes over the stable but I think he’ll do very well out of this. He’s a really fine young trainer.

“I think Ciaron Maher and David Eustace might be taking up those boxes at Ballarat.”
