The wind swung from the North West to the West and abated as the day progressed on what was a terrific day's racing to really get the Melbourne spring carnival heating up.
Race 2 Exford Plate 1400m
Well I'd sacked MR MOZART after getting very keen last time but they went forward here and he showed a liking for that style doing a good job. Aside from getting beaten at a very short quote, ARTORIUS ran a race full of merit, forced to go early given race shape against, I wouldn't drop off him. TUTUKAKA was just not suited here but I still liked his run and he can be followed out in trip.

Race 3 Winning Edge Poseidon Stakes 1100m
Oliver set INGRATIATING alight a little earlier than ideal to get after near co-favourite here in FINANCE TYCOON, that horse capitulated and he was left a sitting shot for RANCH HAND who had a little trouble getting clear and did a good job. Given INGRATIATING has proved such a consistent yardstick for this group I think that effort has to be taken on face value, and RANCH HAND will be better suited to 1200m.

Race 4 Cap DAntibes Stakes 1100m
CRYSTAL BOUND resumed off just the one jump out, certainly wasn't at her top in the yard either, she was the beneficiary of a simple but well executed plan to follow DOSH, nice win. DOSH went super really given she faced the breeze the whole way and only got nailed late. FLYING EVELYN was back to her best after some gear was applied.

Race 5 The Sofitel 1400m
This was quite the race to watch. Brilliant viewing. AYRTON was sent around short odds, he was caught wide here and while he got rolled his effort was still very good. If he's one of yours I'd be sticking fat. Hard not to be impressed by CHERRY TORTONI, he's the one who looks best suited to something further and his return was great. Obviously HARBOUR VIEWS wound the clock right back with a big turn of foot, certainly no knock on that. REGARDSMAREE just got a bit keen again here and he can't get away with that against these. KING MAGNUS is an honest little fellow, going very well, can feature down in the weights in a handicap. The gap of the first five here to the rest says it all, all nice horses.

Race 6 Furphy Lets Elope Stakes 1400m
This was not quickly run early, it meant TURAATH could sit wide on speed and still win, she had race fitness on a few of these but hard not to be impressed by her progression regardless. MYSTIC JOURNEY wound the clock back and ran on very well, INSTANT CELEBRITY also should have lost no admirers off this, the gate hurt her. BUTTER CHICKEN and IMPECUNIOUS both outsprinted here but may be suited out in trip later in the spring. ZOU DANCER had her chance and was on face value disappointing, worth checking the stewards report when it becomes available.
Race 7 Lexus Bobbie Lewis Qlty 1200m
Superb ride by Williams aboard SPLINTEX to get that little bit of cover before going for home and being able to hold off a gallant AWAY GAME. ZOUTORI, EXPRESS PASS, TOO GOOD TOO HARD all ran on well. THE ASTROLOGIST was terrific again on speed given the others doing the same wilted, a very tough and game unit.

Race 8 Pfd Food Services Makybe Diva 1600m
Another superb race. INCENTIVISE copped a very positive ride early, he was off the bit a long way out and did a good job to keep finding. This race was not run quickly early, so that suited those from the front, he did however have plenty of improvement in him. He's going to appreciate further and win a lot of races with that racing style. Some super runs in behind though given the race shape. COLLETTE ran on well, ideally gets some rain in one of these races and will be hard to beat. IMAGING, MO'UNGA, and KEIAI NAUTIQUE all had runs full of merit, the Japanese import perhaps the best placed off those out in trip.

Race 9 Very Special Kids Pin And Win 1700m
FLOATING ARTIST went forward here, appreciated the light weight and was strong to the line. SKYMAN had his chance and was a shade disappointing. Nice return from YOUNG WERTHER who continued to take ground off them up the inside, he can run well next time out to 2000m. Nothing wrong with what WARNING did late either. PERSAN and DEFIBRILLATE both very strong showings also.
