Racing Victoria have announced the 2019 Victorian Spring Racing Carnival will be the first ever in their history to offer more than $100 million in combined prize money.

The carnival itself will receive a $13 million prize money boost with 16 races set to offer trainers and owners prize money of $1 million or more headlined by 21 Group 1 races.

The Melbourne Cup remains the state’s richest race following a $700,000 prize money boost to take the purse to $8 million.

While country racing received a much needed boost with the Ballarat Cup now fetching $500,000 to make it the richest country race in Australia.

Racing Victoria CEO Giles Thompson said this announcement would offer opportunities for all involved in racing to benefit from.

"With more than $100 million in prize money and bonuses on offer across metropolitan and country Victoria, this year’s Spring Racing Carnival offers a great opportunity for a broad range of owners, trainers and jockeys to share in the spoils," Thompson said.

The announcement comes on the back of previous prize money increases throughout Victorian racing which took effect on 1 January 2019 with the total increase for the year now reaching more than $18 million.
