Queensland Derby favourite Nobu tastes victory once again3 weeks ago
Queensland Derby favourite Nobu has tightened into $4.50 (with tab.com.au) following his narrow win in the Mizuno Handicap at Randwick on Saturday.
The Chris Waller-trained Nobu, which was unplaced in the G1 New Zealand Derby over 2400m at Ellerslie on March 2, stood Carif a decent start at the 2000m, before getting his nose in front right on the line in the 2000-metre BM74.
"He's really turned into a professional. He had to dig deep to attack the horse that was all but home," Waller stable representative Charlie Duckworth told Sky Racing.
"He's obviously a very fit horse heading into a Derby."
"Hopefully he can win a Group 1 for some pretty famous owners.
"He'll continue to thrive before heading up to Queensland, where they usually come on again with the warmer climate, so it's very exciting times."
The $600,000, G1 Queensland Derby (2400m) is at Eagle Farm on June 8.
"He's a nice animal going forward," said winning jockey Jason Collett.
"You'd think he would measure up (in the Derby) pretty well."
Meanwhile, promising stayer Wolfe made it four wins from five starts after fending off his rivals in the 2000-metre BM78.
The Novellist gelding is trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott and was ridden to victory by Tim Clark.
"We could've kept going another half-a-lap and they wouldn't have got past him; he just wants a challenge and when they come to him he responds," Clark said.
